Message from the Scoutmaster
Dear Troop 8:

Monday is our last meeting of the summer until September 10.

For scouts attending summer camp, please attend the gear pull on Wednesday at 7pm.

Scouts attending summer camp should meet at Ogden on Sunday, July 22 no later than 11:30am wearing their full Class A uniform. In addition to bringing their gear for the week, scouts should wear their swim suit under their uniform since we will go straight to our swim test after check in.

Between scout and adult sign ups, we will have 65-70 people at summer camp this year, which is terrific. I challenge each scout attending to set goals for summer camp, develop a plan for achieving those goals, and work toward achieving them.

Mark T. Pasko

ATTENTION SCOUTS AND PARENTS

SCOUT ACCOUNTS:

Troop 8 has established a program where Troop 8 scouts in good standing are eligible to earn personal funds through popcorn sales and other official Troop 8 approved fundraising activities.

Net profits through these approved activities are shared with the scout for his use on scout-specific Troop 8 approved activities.

Eligible activities include summer camp, Zoar, Sea–Base, approved purchases from the Council scout shop, among others.

All requests must be approved by the Scoutmaster or the Scout Account ASM.

Please email Sean Dailey at seandailey@verizon.net for details and further questions.

Merit Badge Cards (Blue Cards)
All Boy Scouts, regardless of rank, are encouraged to work on merit badges on their own time. A list of all merit badges (there are more than 160) are published at http://www.scouting.org/ meritbadges.aspx. To earn the rank of Eagle a minimum of 21 merit badges are required. Thirteen (13) merit badges are from a required list.

The Merit Badge Process (when working on merit badges outside of Summer Camp)

·     Once you have identified a merit badge or merit badges that you would like to work on, you should send an email to the Scoutmaster, Mr. Pasko (Email: mtpasko@yahoo.com), to request a merit badge card (commonly called a blue card).

·     Mr. Pasko will approve your request by issuing you with a signed merit badge card containing the name and contact information of a merit badge counselor.

·     Get in touch with the merit badge counselor and explain that you want to earn a merit badge.

·     The counselor may ask to meet you to explain what is expected and to start helping you meet the requirements.

·     You should also discuss work you have already started or possibly completed.

·     Note a number of merit badges require approval from the merit badge counselor prior to start working on the requirements.

·     At completion of the merit badge work the Merit Badge Counselor will sign the blue card. He will also keep one third for his records.

·     Return the rest of the blue card (2 sections) to Mr. Pasko.

·     Merit badges are presented to all scouts at Courts of Honor.

Service Projects
We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give. – Sir Winston Churchill

Please speak to, or email, Mr. Weber (bobweber1@optonline.net) in order to sign-up to volunteer.

Service Project for First Class and Star ranks:

You may also (and are encouraged to) develop your own idea for a service project. All scouts that would like to create their own service project need the prior approval of both Mr. Weber and Mr. Pasko.

Service Hours Requirement for Life Rank:

The requirement is as follows:

·     While a Star Scout, participate in six hours of service through one or more service projects approved by your Scoutmaster. At least three hours of this service must be conservation-related.

Board of Review
Dear Troop 8,

Each month we conduct Boards of Reviews (BORs) for the scouts. This is scheduled after a scout has their Scout Master Conference and the scout’s book is signed. This means the scout is now ready to have his advancement Board of Review.

I’d like to invite you to volunteer to serve on the board. You can volunteer anytime it is convenient for you. BORs are listed in the weekly Troop 8 newsletter.

Board’s of Review (BORs) are held twice a month.

All volunteers are required to take the Youth Protection Training (YPT)

online. There are three videos and a test at the end. The link is:

https://my.scouting.org

Note that this is an UPDATED YPT course and everyone is asked to take this before October 2018.  This include even those who still have time before the previous YPT is expired.

If you are doing this for the first time, you’ll need to create an account first. Those already register simply log in. Upon successful completion, you’ll be sent a copy of your certificate within 24 hours. Print or save for your records and forward a copy to my attention at lilysidorovich@gmail.com.

We meet right after the opening of the scout meeting on the second floor in the conference room at 7:15 pm. This is a great way to meet other parents and scouts, learn a great deal about the scout’s activities and experiences and gain insights on what your own son can be doing and learning.

Contact me anytime on my cell phone. Texting is the best way to reach me. My email is below.

Looking forward to meeting you!

Yours in Scouting,
